A recent government report highlights Jordan’s commendable progress in the realm of renewable energy, with approximately 27 percent of its electricity generated from renewable sources in 2022. Despite the dominance of gas power plants, contributing to 68 percent of the total power generation, the country is on a mission to significantly expand the role of renewables, targeting nearly half of the total energy mix.

The Current Landscape

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in Jordan published a report indicating that around 20,500 GW/h of power was generated in 2022. The majority, 68 percent, was derived from conventional gas power plants, with a modest contribution of approximately five percent from renewable sources. This underscores the potential for growth in the renewable energy sector.

Evolving Power Consumption Patterns

The report reveals a shift in power consumption patterns, with public buildings emerging as major power consumers, accounting for nearly 48 percent of the total domestic power demand in 2022. The industrial sector followed closely, constituting around 21 percent of the demand. This shift in consumption patterns suggests a growing awareness and adoption of renewable energy solutions.

Ambitious Targets for 2030

Jordan is committed to a robust renewable energy agenda, aiming to elevate the share of renewable sources to 30 percent of the energy mix by 2030. International collaboration is playing a pivotal role in this journey, with Jordan and Norway intensifying cooperation in the realms of green hydrogen, renewable energy, and oil and gas exploration, as reported by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Exponential Growth in Renewable Output

Analyzing the years 2015 to 2020, an extensive IRENA report highlights Jordan’s remarkable progress in renewable energy. The country more than doubled its renewable energy output in five years, experiencing a growth of 153.1%. Notably, solar energy contributed 75% to the renewable power mix in 2022, while wind energy constituted 24%.

Sustained Momentum and Collaboration

Jordan’s pursuit of renewable energy is not isolated but is part of a sustained effort to strengthen power links with neighboring countries. The consistent growth in renewable energy installations, as illustrated by IRENA charts, indicates a positive trajectory for the sector. Collaborative efforts with Iraq further amplify the impact, with plans to increase electricity production in the region and invest in both conventional and renewable power generation.
